Symptoms: Foul smelling discharge from the mouth, white or yellow sores in throat and/or mouth, weight loss.
Â
Cause: Cankers are caused by a protozoa parasite called Trichomonas Gallinae.
Â
Background Information: Trichomonas Gallinae are found in stagnent water and are usually transfered to the water by Pigeons and wild Doves.
Â
Treatment:
Â
Keep infected birds isolated from other fowl, do not let them drink from the same cups/dishes/water source as uninfected fowl.
Clean and disinfect water and feed cups, surrounding area of infected fowl.
Treat with Canker pills/powder (follow directions on the packaging), Acidified Copper Sulfate or Metronidazole (not sure if this is found in the US).
If the Canker is large and your fowl is having a hard time eating you can try to cut a bit of the Canker away.
A mixture of Epson Salt and water (1 tsp of Epson Salt to 1fl. oz of water) directly given to the birds crop if they are unable to drink.
Â
Prevention:
Â
Keep fresh clean water in front of your fowl and clean the water cups on a regular basis.
Keep Pigeons and Doves away from your fowl and their drinking water.
A teaspoon of Clorox Bleach in a gallon of drinking water will kill most bacteria/germs/virii/parasites in the drinking water.
Â
Additional Information: Epson Salt can also be mixed at 1lbs. to 5 gal. of drinking water.
Â
Comments: Cankers can seem unstopable at times but with the proper care and some treatment you can have it taken care of in a matter of a few days to a week.
